Edmonton is a winter city and we might as well embrace it! If you are contemplating a wedding during the winter months here are some tips to keep in mind to make the most of your time with your photographer.
Winter light is incredible because the sun stays fairly low throughout the day, and the light bouncing off the snow acts as a natural light reflector (this makes a photographer so happy!). During the summer a photographer is mindful about how high the sun is as it can create harsh shadows, but in the winter even on the brightest, blue sky day this isn’t as much of an issue.
If you love winter and choose to brave the elements, dress accordingly! This doesn’t necessarily mean choosing a dress with sleeves or covering up more than you might want to (although accessorizing with a cute fur wrap or beautiful colored shawl could be gorgeous!) Have someone come along for your portraits (a maid of honor or a designated family member) and have them hold your coat, mittens, etc as you’re having photos taken. You can always take breaks and warm up in between! If it’s quite cold that day consider wearing some long johns under your dress to stay warm during photos – who’s going to be the wiser?! As for the groom, be mindful that men’s dress shoes are typically slippery on slick or smooth surfaces. It could be worth wearing boots to a location, and switching footwear out upon arrival.
As a bride, you can have a lot of fun with your look when you plan a winter wedding. If you’re a bit more adventurous you may wish to choose a dress with a hint of colour to stand out against the snow, or a dress with sparkle to really shine! You can go for a timeless look with a red lip, or choose bright, bold florals to really pop against the white. Have fun with it!
I love the idea of really embracing the season and going all in – this could include getting beautiful coordinated mittens for yourself & your bridesmaids for some fun portraits, or bringing along a beautiful blanket and using it as a prop to snuggle up and get intimate, candid-style photos with your groom. There are so many ways to make it unique to suit your preferences while also embracing the beauty of the season!
