“What will look good on me?” This is a question we get a lot. So we decide to have the gist of it out for those struggling to find a flattering gown to wear for their big day. There’s a number of factors that play onto what will look good on a bride. Most dresses are beautiful, but you have to find the one that tailors to you, your personality, and makes you feel the most beautiful in. It mainly comes down to a feeling – as cheesy as it sounds. Sometimes, wedding dress shopping, we have to take out the logical sense of things. Leave the logistics to the consultant and understand how you feel in a certain dress as you try them on. Never, ever knock something out without trying it on, sometimes you’ll be pleasantly surprised. Another reason is because we do have a lot of brides out there who always wonders “what if”.
“What if I look better in a ballgown, even though I didn’t want one?”
“What if I went with too much detail on my gown?”
“What if a strapless would be more comfortable?”
And so on.
We typically suggest brides who don’t know what they’re looking for to try on every shape and variety – see all your wide range of options. Photos, models and seeing the dress on a hanger or a mannequin is not the same. You’re shopping anyways, so give it a go. You need to feel that trust with your consultant, their goal is to make you bring out the stunning bride you are – not to just sell you on some dress.
Yes, there are certain shapes that flatter a person and yes, we have our insecurities. However, consultants can sometimes see the shape in depth than what you physically show and would be able to find some dresses with details that fit well with your figure and personality. We do see the basic figure shapes, like apples, pears, hourglass, rectangle, etc. That is just an overall general shape. Because you’re a pear – doesn’t necessarily mean you need to hide your hips. Try on a fit and flare! Yes your hips will be extenuated, but with the flare on the bottom of the gown it could even out your figure and make your waist look teeny tiny! It creates more of that hourglass figure for you, especially if you have a smaller top (which most of us do). Sometimes going into shopping with a list of absolutely no’s could be more helpful than having a specific idea in mind! So for those who are struggling to find something to wear for their big day – keep an open mind. Find a reputable boutique who can help lead you and give you advice.
